Story & Journey
Born into a distinguished family of Nobel laureates (Sir C. V. Raman and Subrahmanyan Chandrasekhar) in Mylapore, Chennai, she graduated from Madras Medical College with an MBBS and MD. In 1955, turning down lucrative government appointments, she joined Dr. Krishnamurthi and Dr. Muthulakshmi Reddi at the newly founded 12-bed Cancer Institute in Adyar on an honorarium basis, residing in the hospital campus itself to be near patients round-the-clock.
Under her leadership as Director and Chairperson, the Adyar Cancer Institute expanded from a humble voluntary clinic into a 500-bed comprehensive cancer center recognized by the World Health Organization. She introduced India's first pediatric oncology clinic, first Cobalt-60 teletherapy unit, and spearheaded mobile rural screening vans across Tamil Nadu.
Her steadfast conviction that no cancer patient should be denied treatment due to poverty made Adyar a beacon of ethical medicine. She was honored with the Ramon Magsaysay Award, Padma Shri, Padma Bhushan, and Padma Vibhushan.
